Safe Bathing Water
Our application for Safe Bathing Water status is awaiting DEFRA’s decision. We expect a result by April 30th – and we believe that will be successful.
If the Lido is designated, the Environment Agency must monitor water quality during the bathing season 15 May to 30 September to protect the health of people bathing. This is likely to result in warning notices, timely information about current water quality and long term actions to improve E.coli concentrations in particular.
There is no quick fix, but we all need to monitor EA and YW actions and effects, and keep the pressure on to gain improvements for our lovely Nidd. NAG will do its part. Please help us!

Campaigning
The poor state of our rivers, including the Nidd, is a big media topic right now.
Water companies are facing much criticism for how they have managed their finances and what they have (or haven’t) done to reduce sewage spills.
The Environment Agency and DEFRA are criticized for inadequate monitoring and management of water companies
With a number of elections approaching, NAG will continue to scrutinize the activities of these and other organisations – and we hope you will too!

Citizen Science
NAG worked with local volunteers in 2023 to assess the health and ecological status of our river Nidd.
More is planned this year, building on our findings of high concentrations of different pollutants in specific places and working with YDRT, Universities and companies
We are starting by looking at Bilton and Oak Becks - to establish their current ecological health and sources of pollution and to work with EA and others to find possible causes and to establish what can be done to improve them.
We propose a range of activities including: outfall identification, mapping of invasive species, bankside vegetation and invertebrate diversity as well as focused water quality investigations
Sign up to NAG as a volunteer, so you receive the regular newsletters outlining practical actions you can take with us, including training, so we can be a true scientific resource for our rivers.

Celebrating the Nidd
Many local citizens and tourists who value Yorkshire for its natural resources take part in activities centred around the Nidd. E.g. the Nidderdale Charity Walk (May 19th), The Great Knaresborough Bed Race (June 8th) and the Nidd Art Trail (August).
NAG is proposing other activities to highlight how important the Nidd is to us all, and to have fun doing it.
Apart from individual activities such as boating, swimming, fishing, rambling, picnicking, dog-walking etc, communal artistic and craft efforts can only increase our feeling of wellbeing while enjoying the amenities the river provides.
NAG is taking part in a University of Leeds project to explore what we feel about the Nidd and how we can enhance its positive effects on us. We also envisage community generated interactive information to enhance our enjoyment.
